Focus on checkpoint 3 (CP3), Cajamarca to Huaraz
The HALF Race starts in Cajamarca for the “sprinters” who plan to sign up for the FULL edition in the future. It is also the third checkpoint of the FULL, where things will get serious reaching the “Capital city of friendship”: Huaraz! Here is what awaits the riders arriving at the third checkpoint of the Race (CP3).
1. Legendary Andean dirt roads
Riders have many route planning options from Cajamarca to head down South to Pallasca village. Some of these have mythical “gravel” sections where riders dive straight into the Andes Cordillera and its numerous protected archaeological parks. The most careful riders may safely follow the main PE3N paved road (not less spectacular!).
2. Cañon del Pato and its 35 tunnels!
This canyon is 40 kilometers long. Riders will pedal through vertiginous scenery following the Rio Santa, between two vertical mountain giants: the White and Black Cordilleras. Lights on! The tunnels are not equipped with lights and some of them are hundreds meters long.
3. The White Cordillera!
Before arriving to Huaraz, riders will discover the mythical White Cordillera, the heart of Occidental peruvian Andes. This section will be unforgettable with a clear view of Peru’s highest mountain: Huascaran (the snowed twins in Quechua). It is divided into two spectacular summits (North and South) which are 6655 meters and 6768m high. The most adventurous riders will take the opportunity to tackle a bonus loop which crosses the Huascaran national Park !
The High point of this checkpoint: Huascaran national Park. This bonus loop is described in the Roadbook given to each participant. It gives an opportunity to beat a 4736 meters pass on a paved road and reach the highest tunnel for vehicules in the world (Punta Olimpica). Riders who are searching for the Spirit of the Peruvian Andes Cordillera need to ride this climb.
